Sara Lakhani From Design to Sustainability
Sara Lakhani was born and brought up in Gadchiroli, a small town in Maharashtra. She was always interested in design and fashion, but also aware of the problem of plastic pollution. She says, "I grew up seeing my father, who worked in the pharmaceutical industry, burn plastic waste. I knew it was harmful for the environment and the health of the people."
She moved to Nagpur to pursue her degree in fashion design and decided to use her skills and creativity to address the issue of plastic waste. She says, "I wanted to create clothes that are not only stylish but also sustainable. I wanted to use plastic waste as a resource rather than a burden."
She started experimenting with plastic bags and learned how to make threads out of them. She also learned how to do Kantha embroidery, an ancient art form that originated in West Bengal and involves stitching together layers of fabric with running stitches. She says, "I chose Kantha embroidery because it is a very versatile and expressive technique. It also uses a lot of thread, which suited my purpose of using plastic waste."
She started sharing her work on her Instagram page @saralakhani.13 and soon gained a lot of followers who were impressed by her innovative and eco-friendly designs. She says, "I received a lot of positive feedback and encouragement from people who liked my concept and products. I also got inquiries from people who wanted to buy my clothes or learn how to make them."

Sara Lakhani's Mission to Make Fashion Eco-Friendly
Sara Lakhani's vision is to make fashion eco-friendly and fun. She believes that plastic waste can be transformed into something beautiful and valuable. She says, "Plastic waste is a huge problem in India and the world. It takes hundreds of years to decompose and causes a lot of damage to the environment and wildlife. I wanted to show that plastic waste can be used creatively and responsibly."
She started conducting workshops on how to make plastic threads and how to do Kantha embroidery using them. She has taught over 300 people so far in various cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, etc. She says, "I want to spread awareness about the importance of recycling and reusing plastic waste. I want to inspire people to create their own clothes using plastic waste."
She also launched her clothing line Trash or Treasure in 2022 and showcased her collection at Lakme Fashion Week, one of the most prestigious fashion events in India. She used more than 200 plastic bags to create 12 garments that featured vibrant colours and intricate patterns. She says, "It was a dream come true for me to showcase my collection at Lakme Fashion Week. It was an opportunity to reach out to a wider audience and showcase the potential of plastic waste as a fashion material."

Sara Lakhani A Role Model for Many

She says, "I feel happy when I see people wearing my clothes and enjoying them. I feel proud when I see people learning from me and creating their own clothes using plastic waste. I feel grateful when I see people supporting my cause and joining me in making fashion eco-friendly."
